Celebrate Your Independence with a New Watch

Summer is in full swing, and the Fourth of July weekend starts next Friday. It’s a time to get outside with family and friends and celebrate your independence in style. And what better way to celebrate your personal independence than to choose a luxury timepiece that clearly demonstrates and celebrates all that you have achieved.

While there are many brands to choose from, the most popular here at DavidSW (and around the world) is Rolex. Today, we’re covering three models from the manufacturer that are practically synonymous with the brand and can be yours just in time for the holiday.*

The Cosmopolitan – Rolex GMT Master II

The Rolex GMT has a long history dating back to 1954 when the brand partnered with the airline juggernaut, Pan American Airways, to create a watch that could tell the time from two different time zones, celebrating the freedom of air travel.

Fast forward seventy-one years and the model has grown leaps and bounds. The model was eventually upgraded in 1982, introducing a new movement and upgraded functionality. In addition to internal improvements, the watch was also released with a handful of different bezel options dubbed the “Coke,” “Pepsi,” “Blueberry,” “Root Beer,” and “Batman.”

Today, the most recent release has earned the name, “Bruce Wayne,” for its black and grey bezel. A black dial gets a subtle pop of green in the text and on the GMT hand. Fans of the brand will know that this is the closest we’ve come to the return of a full black bezel, but many argue the black and grey allows full use of the GMT function with a night and day indication. On a Jubilee bracelet, the watch is upscale and professional, allowing the wearer versatility from boardroom to boardwalk, and from dinner table to poker table.

The Diver – Rolex Submariner 41

The Rolex Submariner is arguably the most iconic dive watch in the world, helping generations of divers explore their independence under the deep blue sea. Dating back to 1953, the watch was built for divers with a water resistance of 100 meters, a rotating bezel, and luminous markers. Through the years, the watch was upgraded several times over. Depth ratings increased, crown guards were added, the iconic “Mercedes” hand was introduced (still in use to this day), and a date window was added. When Rolex finally added the “Cyclops eye” magnification over the date, the watch sprang into fashion with non-divers, as well.

Today, the most recent edition of the Submariner has grown to 41mm, features a ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal, and the 70-hour reserve 3235 automatic movement. With a black dial, the watch makes for a great “daily” that you can wear in almost any environment. And whether you like to go diving or not, the watch has 300 meters of water resistance for all-day peace of mind.

The Timekeeper – Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

As the most popular sports watch ever produced, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has been making mouths drop and wallets burn since the 1980s when actor, director, and race car driver, Paul Newman, quickly popularized the model as a testament to personal independence both on and off the track.

The watch received several upgrades over the years including a period in the 80s and 90s when Rolex utilized Zenith El Primero movements. Today these watches are highly collectable. Eventually, Rolex switched to in-house calibers, and the craze continued.

Today, the watch still holds the title as the most popular sports watch in the world with the most recent steel versions available with black or white (aka “Panda”) dials. The watch features a black ceramic bezel encased in a ring of stainless steel, a sapphire crystal, slimmer subdials, indices, and hands, a slimmer case, and an upgraded 72-hour reserve 4131 caliber. Evoking the racing spirit at a glance,  it’s easy to see why the model has remained a constant in the industry.
